Choosing Kindness: A Necessity Beyond the British Columbia Provincial Election

As we await the outcome of the recent British Columbia provincial election, the atmosphere is filled with anticipation and uncertainty. Critical issues such as housing affordability, climate change, healthcare accessibility, and Indigenous rights have sparked passionate debates, leaving many of us feeling anxious about the future. In this moment, it’s essential to remember the power of choosing kindness, regardless of the election results. Fostering a spirit of compassion and collaboration is crucial for building strong, resilient communities.

The Importance of the Election

In British Columbia, voters faced pressing concerns that hit close to home. The housing crisis has reached critical levels, with countless families struggling to find suitable homes. As candidates presented their solutions, discussions often turned heated, with strong opinions on whether to prioritize new developments or implement stricter rent controls. The urgency to combat climate change further divided us; while some advocate for immediate action, others worry about the economic consequences. And let’s not forget the frustrations many feel regarding healthcare accessibility, with wait times and service disparities remaining significant topics.

In such a charged environment, it’s easy to slip into a mindset of blame. Political rhetoric can quickly become toxic, pitting neighbors against one another instead of fostering constructive dialogue. But we must remind ourselves that every opinion is rooted in personal experience and genuine concern for our shared future.

Building Communities Through Kindness

Choosing kindness in our interactions can significantly change the political landscape. When we approach debates with empathy, we recognize that our neighbors are also searching for solutions to the same challenges. Instead of viewing opposing views as threats, we can see them as opportunities for collaboration and understanding.

Building strong communities requires collective effort. Whether we advocate for increasing housing supply or enhancing rent controls, our ultimate goal—affordable housing for all—remains the same. By emphasizing this shared vision, we create a foundation for constructive dialogue, steering away from finger-pointing and blame.

The Role of Community Engagement

Active community engagement is essential for nurturing kindness. Local initiatives—such as town hall meetings, community forums, and volunteer projects—provide valuable spaces for diverse voices to come together. These platforms not only encourage respectful conversations but also help dispel myths that fuel division.

Take, for instance, the discussions surrounding Indigenous rights and reconciliation. Meaningful engagement with Indigenous communities allows us to learn about their histories and perspectives. This understanding is vital for making informed decisions that respect Indigenous rights and contribute to healing. Choosing kindness here means listening actively, acknowledging past injustices, and working collaboratively toward a more equitable future.

The Power of Kindness in Action

The impact of choosing kindness extends beyond political discourse into our daily lives. Simple acts—like listening to someone with a different viewpoint or participating in community events—create an atmosphere of respect and openness. Over time, these small gestures can accumulate, leading to a cultural shift that prioritizes understanding over division.

Moreover, in times of uncertainty, kindness serves as a source of resilience. When our communities face challenges—be they economic, social, or environmental—a culture of kindness fosters support and solidarity. Neighbors who feel valued are more likely to collaborate, sharing resources and ideas rather than retreating into isolation.

Looking Ahead: Embracing Unity

Regardless of the election outcome, the need for kindness remains paramount. Politicians and policies may shift, but the strength of our communities lies in the relationships we nurture and the understanding we promote. A victory for one party should not translate into a loss for another; instead, it should motivate us all to come together for the common good.

In the wake of the election, let’s challenge ourselves to extend kindness to those who may feel disappointed. Encouraging inclusive dialogues that embrace different perspectives strengthens our democratic process and fosters a healthier political climate. This commitment to kindness can help heal divides and create a sense of belonging that is vital for a thriving society.

What Next? A Call to Kindness

As we navigate the uncertainty following the British Columbia provincial election, let’s prioritize kindness in our conversations and actions. The debates may have been intense, and the implications significant, but our commitment to one another must transcend the political arena. By choosing kindness, we lay the groundwork for resilient communities that can withstand future challenges.

In a time when division often feels easier than unity, let’s choose the more challenging path—the path of compassion, understanding, and collaboration. In doing so, we not only enrich our lives but also create a legacy of kindness that will inspire future generations. Choosing kindness is not just an ideal; it’s a necessity for the future we all wish to build together.

The Bittersweet Moments of Growing Up: Reflections from the Oldest Millennials

Growing up in Calgary, Alberta, as a racialized person was a journey filled with stark contrasts—joys intertwined with challenges, innocence shadowed by the weight of societal expectations. As the oldest of the millennial generation, I carry the bittersweet memories of my upbringing, a patchwork quilt of experiences that continue to shape how I navigate life today, especially as I raise my children in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia.

Adolescence: A World of Wonder and Isolation

My adolescence in Calgary feels a lifetime ago (when in actuality I suppose it was half my lifetime ago), splatter painted in murky colors of exploration, discovery, angst, and tears. I remember long summer days spent listening to bands, drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes with the laughter of friends. But beneath that carefree punk-rock veneer, there was a reality I couldn’t escape. The casual stares and micro-agression (which is a term I know now, but didn't have the words for it back then) cloud, making me acutely aware of my racial identity from an early age.

In a conservative environment where cultural homogeneity was the norm, I often felt like an outsider, even in my own friend group. The joy of playing with friends was sometimes punctuated by the sting of exclusion, where differences were highlighted rather than celebrated. While my peers chatted about summer vacations, who was dating who, and what parties were happening this weekend, I grappled with the complexities of identity, feeling the need to balance my heritage with the desire to fit in. It was a delicate dance—one that taught me resilience but also sparked an early yearning for belonging.

From a young age, I was drawn to social justice and activism, inspired by the stories of those who fought for equality and recognition. Yet, I often felt uncertain about how to actualize that passion. The world felt too big and the challenges too daunting for teenage me. I watched and listened, soaking in the narratives around me, but I didn’t quite know how to step into the role of an advocate. The desire to make a difference simmered beneath the surface, fueling a quiet determination that would later blossom into a more defined purpose.

Adolescence: The Struggle for Acceptance

As I transitioned into adolescence, the stakes felt higher. The pressures to conform intensified, and the expectation to excel academically was often coupled with the burden of representation. I was not just me; I was a reflection of my culture, my family, and my community. The joys of school dances and social gatherings were often tinged with anxiety. Would I be accepted? Would my differences be acknowledged or marginalized?

In a city that felt increasingly divided, navigating my identity was a bittersweet experience. The joy of achievements, such as good grades (which, maybe was all I had), was often overshadowed by the nagging fear of being seen as a “token.” The conversations around race and culture felt distant, as if they were topics reserved for university classrooms rather than high school hallways. I longed for discussions that acknowledged the richness of our diverse backgrounds but was met instead with silence or discomfort.

The desire to engage in social activism grew stronger during these years. I yearned to be part of conversations that could inspire change, yet I often felt paralyzed by my own uncertainties. I was an idealist, but the path to actualizing those ideals felt unclear, as if I were standing on the sidelines, watching others take the lead.

Adulthood: New Horizons and Old Wounds

Moving to the Lower Mainland of British Columbia marked a new chapter, filled with hope and opportunity. The multicultural fabric of this region offered a sense of belonging that had often eluded me in Calgary. Here, I saw families that mirrored my own—families of various backgrounds celebrating their cultures openly. My children, now growing up in this vibrant environment, attend schools where diversity is not just acknowledged but embraced. This shift has been profoundly healing, allowing me to envision a different future for them.

Yet, the bittersweet nature of my journey remains. While I am grateful for the inclusivity I see around me, I am also reminded of the challenges I faced. The conversations about race and identity that are becoming more prevalent in today’s society often stir a mix of emotions in me—relief that we are finally talking about these issues and sadness for the moments of my youth that felt stifled.

As a mother, I am determined to equip my children with the tools to navigate their own identities in a world that can still be complex and often contradictory. I hope to interweave social justice and activism into every aspect of their lives—fostering a sense of empathy, critical thinking, and responsibility. I want them to grow up not just aware of the world’s injustices but also inspired to challenge them. My hope is that it won’t lead to an Alex P. Keaton moment (if you don't get the reference then I guess you will have to click the link to find out more) where my children reject the values I hold dear in favor of something far removed from our family’s principles. Instead, I envision them embracing these ideals, making them their own, and carrying the torch of advocacy forward with passion and purpose.

Embracing the Bittersweet

The journey of growing up as a racialized person in a conservative environment has shaped my worldview in ways that are both profound and nuanced. The bittersweet moments of my childhood—marked by joy, pain, acceptance, and struggle—have informed how I engage with my community and raise my children.

I find strength in the lessons learned from those experiences. They remind me of the importance of representation, of being a voice for others who might feel unheard. I strive to create spaces where my children can express themselves freely, where they feel valued for who they are rather than how they conform.

As I reflect on the bittersweet nature of my journey, I recognize that it is not just about individual experiences but also about the collective narratives we share. We are all woven together in a larger story of resilience, growth, and the ongoing quest for belonging. In nurturing my children’s identities, I hope to foster a sense of pride in their heritage while encouraging them to embrace the diversity of the world around them.

In this ever-evolving landscape, the challenges may still arise, but so too will moments of joy and connection. I hold onto the belief that by acknowledging and embracing the bittersweet, we can pave the way for a brighter, more inclusive future for generations to come.

Take a Moment to Breath

Because sometimes, in those rare, quiet moments, you let your guard down. You take a deep breath, and for just a heartbeat, you allow yourself to think, “I’ve got this. This will be okay.” It’s an exquisite sensation, like finding a hidden pocket of stillness in a world that rarely offers such solace. You picture yourself gliding through life, each day seamlessly folding into the next, like a gently flowing stream. But just as you begin to believe in the illusion of calm, the weight shifts beneath you. Suddenly, the stable waters you’ve come to rely on morph into a turbulent sea, churning with the unpredictable forces of existence.

In those moments, when it feels as if you’ve finally caught your breath, that’s when life decides to throw a curveball, a change that strikes you like a slap in the face. It can come from anywhere—a fleeting thought, a message you weren’t expecting, or even a passing comment from a friend. The ground beneath you, once solid, crumbles away, leaving you grappling for balance. Nothing is ever easy, is it? And perhaps it shouldn’t be. Is this all part of a learning process, this relentless journey of letting go and trying to remain anchored in the present moment?

The art of living seems to hinge on a delicate balance. We are perpetually urged to let go of the past, to release our grip on those moments that once felt significant yet now weigh us down. Yet, in that very act of letting go, we often find ourselves clinging to the future—an unwritten book that we are desperate to decipher. We strive to predict the unpredictable, to chart our course through the fog, hoping that one day we will discover a map that leads us straight to a destination of ease and stability.

As I ponder this, I wonder: when will life finally stabilize? When will it feel like I’m coasting downhill, rather than laboring uphill, straining to find the path that leads to clarity? The quest for that elusive calm feels endless, an unyielding search for moments where I can rest and simply be. I picture a future where the waves have settled, where I can bask in the sunlight without the clouds of uncertainty looming overhead.

But perhaps that’s the crux of it all. Life is not a straight line, and the journey itself is a series of peaks and valleys. The moments of clarity, those rare interludes of tranquility, often come only after navigating through storms. It’s the turbulent seas that shape us, that teach us resilience. Each unexpected change nudges us toward growth, urging us to adapt and redefine our understanding of what it means to be grounded.

I think of all the times I’ve tried to construct my own version of stability. There were days when I meticulously planned out my life, believing that if I just followed the steps, I could create a fortress against chaos. But life has a way of dismantling even the strongest walls. It teaches you that control is an illusion, that certainty is often a fleeting mirage.

And so, I find myself in this dance with uncertainty, navigating the ever-shifting tides. I am learning, slowly but surely, to let go. To surrender to the moment, to embrace the messiness of existence. There’s a beauty in the unpredictability, a rawness that invites us to engage with life in its entirety. It pushes us to be present, to appreciate the laughter amidst the chaos and to find meaning even in the most tumultuous of waters.

I remind myself that perhaps this journey is not just about seeking stability. Maybe it’s about cultivating resilience, about developing the strength to face whatever life throws our way. It’s about learning to ride the waves, to find balance in the midst of a storm, and to remember that even turbulent seas can eventually lead to calmer shores.

So, I allow myself to embrace this uncertainty. I let the tides come and go, trusting that with each ebb and flow, I am learning something valuable. The future may remain unwritten, but I have the tools to navigate its intricacies. Each change, each unexpected twist, is an opportunity to learn and grow, to redefine my relationship with both the past and the future.

And as I reflect on all this, I realize that the weight of life may never truly disappear. Instead, it transforms, shifting from burdensome to illuminating, as I learn to carry it with grace. I may never find that perfect map, but I can learn to chart my own course, guided by the lessons of the sea. Because life is a journey, a beautifully chaotic ride, and perhaps that is where the true magic lies—within the embrace of the unpredictable, the joy of the uncharted, and the strength that comes from riding the waves.

Raising Resilient Hearts: Nurturing Compassion in a Challenging World

Raising four kids in today’s world feels like navigating a maze filled with obstacles, some familiar and some new. The political landscape is ever-shifting, often steeped in colonial, patriarchal, and capitalist ideals that threaten to dehumanize those who don’t conform to societal norms. As a parent, I find myself wrestling with these challenges daily, striving to instill values in my children that counteract the narratives we encounter in social media and mainstream culture.

Since my adolescence, I have been passionate about social justice and committed to fostering a more compassionate and kind society where everyone is valued. This long-standing interest fuels my parenting approach and shapes the discussions I have with my children.

The Weight of Expectations

From the moment they’re born, children are bombarded with expectations shaped by deeply entrenched societal structures. These expectations often favor a narrow definition of success and worth, perpetuated by colonial and patriarchal frameworks. For instance, there’s an implicit message that to be valuable, one must achieve certain milestones—be it academic excellence, athletic prowess, or a picture-perfect family life as seen through the lens of platforms like Instagram.

This pressure can feel overwhelming, especially as I watch my children grapple with their identities and aspirations. I want them to understand that their worth is not determined by their performance in these societal games but by their kindness, resilience, and authenticity. However, combating the allure of curated perfection on social media is no small feat.

The Illusion of Social Media

Social media, particularly platforms like Instagram, presents an idealized version of reality that is often unattainable. As a parent, I see how my children are influenced by the images and narratives they encounter online. They compare themselves to friends, influencers, and celebrities, often internalizing the belief that they must fit a certain mold to be accepted or loved.

This is where the challenge deepens. Colonial and patriarchal ideals often dictate what “success” looks like, which can lead to feelings of inadequacy among those who don’t fit those standards. I’ve had conversations with my kids about the difference between reality and the curated lives they see online, but it’s an uphill battle. We live in a world that often prioritizes superficiality over substance, making it difficult for them to cultivate a strong sense of self-worth.

The Impact of Capitalism

In addition to social media, the pervasive influence of capitalism adds another layer of complexity to parenting. The capitalist framework thrives on competition, fostering an environment where individuals are often pitted against one another. My kids feel this pressure, whether it’s in school, sports, or even social circles. The drive to “get ahead” can overshadow values like empathy, cooperation, and community.

It’s crucial for me to teach my children that true success is not measured by material wealth or social status but by the impact they have on others and their commitment to social justice. This often means having tough conversations about the inequities that exist in our society and helping them understand that they have a role to play in challenging these systems. However, as we delve into these discussions, I worry about the weight of these topics on their young shoulders.

Counteracting Dehumanization

One of the most pressing challenges I face is teaching my kids to recognize and resist dehumanizing narratives. These narratives are often perpetuated by media and politics, which can portray certain groups in a negative light, reinforcing stereotypes and biases. It’s essential for me to foster a sense of empathy and understanding in my children, encouraging them to question the narratives they encounter and seek out diverse perspectives.

We engage in discussions about race, gender, and class, highlighting the importance of intersectionality. I encourage my kids to explore the histories of marginalized communities, helping them understand that these histories are vital to their own identities and the world they inhabit. Yet, I often wonder if I’m doing enough. How can I ensure they carry these lessons into adulthood, where they will undoubtedly encounter the very systems I hope to dismantle?

Finding Balance and Hope

Despite these challenges, I remain hopeful. I’ve seen my children develop their own values, often surprising me with their insights and empathy. We make a conscious effort to prioritize family discussions, create safe spaces for expressing emotions, and engage in community activities that promote inclusivity and kindness.

This commitment to social justice, rooted in my own experiences since adolescence, drives me to emphasize the importance of compassion in our daily lives. I remind my children that every small act of kindness contributes to a larger movement toward a more equitable society. Together, we volunteer, support local initiatives, and participate in conversations that advocate for change.

I also remind myself that change takes time. By raising my kids to question societal norms, appreciate diversity, and challenge oppressive systems, I believe we are laying the groundwork for a more just future. Each small step we take together—whether it’s discussing current events, volunteering, or simply being there for one another—matters.

So What's Next?

Raising four kids in a world riddled with colonial, patriarchal, and capitalist ideologies is undeniably challenging. Yet, amidst the chaos, there’s beauty in the process. I strive to equip my children with the tools to navigate this landscape with compassion, resilience, and critical thinking. Together, we can redefine success and build a more humane world, one conversation and action at a time. While the journey may be daunting, it’s also filled with hope, love, and the promise of a brighter future.

Love,

Balancing Parenthood and a Nursing Career in a Challenging Landscape

Being a parent of four while juggling a demanding career as a Registered Nurse (RN) is no small feat, especially in a healthcare environment fraught with shortages and crises. My life is a complex tapestry of responsibilities, but it’s one I embrace with both love and determination. Add to this equation my marriage to another Registered Nurse, and you can imagine the whirlwind of our daily existence.

The Balancing Act

Each morning starts early, with the faint sound of my alarm serving as a reminder that I’m not just a caregiver; I’m a provider and a critical part of a healthcare system in desperate need of support. My partner and I often coordinate our schedules to ensure that at least one of us is home for our children. This can be a logistical puzzle, particularly when both of us have demanding shifts, but we manage. There’s a rhythm to our household, a dance we’ve perfected over the years, though it can sometimes feel more like a chaotic shuffle.

In our family, the division of labor is non-traditional. I’ve taken on the role of the primary wage earner, while my partner carries most of the burden of household chores and childcare. This arrangement has allowed us to thrive in our respective roles, challenging conventional gender norms. My partner manages the day-to-day responsibilities at home, ensuring the kids have a stable environment while I focus on my demanding career. This collaboration has proven to be a strength in our relationship, allowing us both to contribute meaningfully to our family in ways that align with our skills and passions.

Education has always been a high priority for both of us. We both pursued and completed multiple master’s degrees and doctoral degrees, driven by a commitment to advancing our knowledge and expertise. This shared dedication to education not only enhances our professional capabilities but also sets a powerful example for our children about the value of lifelong learning and hard work. Balancing our academic pursuits with parenting has required exceptional time management, but it’s a testament to our determination to excel in both our personal and professional lives.

The Challenges of Nursing

In the nursing profession, we’re all too familiar with the challenges our healthcare system faces. With increasing patient loads, staffing shortages, and the lingering effects of the pandemic, the landscape can feel overwhelming. Yet, my dedication to my career remains steadfast. I entered nursing to make a difference, and each shift is a reminder of why I chose this path.

Balancing work with parenthood requires mental and emotional resilience. I’ve learned to compartmentalize—putting aside the stress of a particularly challenging day to focus on my children when I come home. The fatigue can be palpable, but the smiles and laughter of my kids serve as a balm for the weariness that often lingers after a long shift. Focus on how to make work-life balance for nurses better is under spotlight because of the the national nursing shortage.

Life in the Most Expensive Place in Canada

Living in one of the most expensive places in Canada presents its own set of challenges. The high cost of living weighs heavily on our shoulders, adding financial stress to an already complex life. As RNs, we are fortunate to have stable careers, yet the reality of our expenses often forces us to make sacrifices. We find ourselves creatively budgeting, seeking out community programs, and maximizing every opportunity for our children.

This economic strain has taught us invaluable lessons about prioritization and resourcefulness. While we may not be able to afford lavish vacations or extravagant birthday parties, we focus on enriching experiences—family hikes, visits to local parks, and community events that foster a sense of togetherness. Our love and commitment to one another, paired with the resilience we’ve built, have become the cornerstones of our family life.

A Shared Commitment

Being married to another Registered Nurse amplifies our shared understanding of the challenges and rewards of our profession. We support each other, often debriefing after shifts and sharing the emotional toll of our day-to-day experiences. This mutual understanding deepens our connection, allowing us to navigate the complexities of our lives with empathy and insight.

Together, we’ve forged a partnership that is both a professional collaboration and a personal alliance. We celebrate each other’s successes and provide solace during the more difficult days. Our children witness this dynamic, absorbing lessons about teamwork, resilience, and the importance of caring for others.

Finding Joy Amidst Chaos

Despite the chaos, there are moments of sheer joy that punctuate our lives. Family movie nights, weekend baking sessions, and impromptu dance parties in the living room remind us of the love that binds us together. These moments are treasures that help offset the stress of our busy lives.

Additionally, my role as a nurse has enriched my parenting in ways I never anticipated. The skills I’ve honed in my profession—patience, empathy, and effective communication—translate seamlessly into my role as a parent. Whether it’s comforting a child during a scary moment or educating them about health and wellness, I draw on my experiences to nurture my children.

Embracing the Beautiful Chaos

In a world that often seems to pull us in countless directions, I remain committed to being both a parent and a dedicated nurse. The challenges we face—whether they stem from the demands of our careers, the complexities of family life, or the economic pressures of living in a costly city—only serve to strengthen my resolve.

Each day, I am reminded that I am not just caring for my family and patients; I am nurturing future generations of compassionate individuals. Through it all, I find purpose in the chaos, strength in my dedication, and joy in the love that surrounds me. Being a parent and a nurse may be challenging, but it’s a journey I wouldn’t trade for anything.
